Gas shortage, really?

According the the New York Times article “Behind New York Gas Lines, Warnings and Crossed Fingers” By DAVID W. CHEN, WINNIE HU and CLIFFORD KRAUSS, Published: November 9, 2012, the primary reasons for the current gas shortage to port damage from Sandy and unpreparedness.  I contend that the problem is much deeper.

Where are our US strategic gas reserves?  With all the military presence here in the “hard hit” areas - whose power ourtage numbers do not even appear in the utility reports anymore, why isn't the government easing demand by using just a small touch of our reserves, you know, the ones the press always referrs to as a "great tool" the president has to keep gas prices from going up too fast?

I believe there is more to the story than damaged ports.  We have the greatest roads in the world and a vast rail system that can bring in gas from anywhere in the country, Canada or Mexico, why aren't our reserves being used?

With all the gas we have in the great country and the fact the Sandy is almost 2 weeks past, there are only two possibilities.

  1. We really don’t have the gas reserves the press and our government refer to

    -or-

  2. our local and state government find it acceptable to have this level of demand on gas and this level of harship on its citizens

I remeber the oil shortage of the 1970's and I never felt more gas, electric and heat insecure than I do now.

Either way, we are not being told the whole story or the truth and we won’t be leveled with until we raise enough pressure with our government.  Without sufficient fuel, commerce slows dramatically and we quickly reduce to a 3rd world like country.
