Song by song, Jonny Meyers is catching up with the traditions left quietly behind in his native Forest Hills – the small hub of Queens, which provided the breeding grounds for legendary songwriters like Paul Simon, Burt Bacharach, and the founding members of The Ramones. Year by year, Kevin Batchelor racks up credit after credit as the go-to guy for the greats in Reggae and Ska such as Sugar Minot, Steel Pulse & The Skatalites, and much more. On his own, KB moves the genre forward with his golden voice and trumpet with projects such as Kevin Batchelor’s Grand Concourse and the NYC Ska Orchestra.
In 2012, the two joined forces in an acoustic duo they simple call Kevin & Jonny. The duo follows a late 1950s/early 1960s Jamaican tradition of rhythm & blues called ‘BlueBeat.’ They sing closet classics in complete harmony; a style pioneered by Jamaican artists such as the Blues Busters and Cosmo & Denzel, that even brought us some popular hits in the U.S. such as “My Boy Lollipop,” by Minnie Smalls.
On October 8th, the duo brings it all to Thai Rock. Bluebeat classics, new/original bluebeat classics of the future, and original songs they’ve both written for various projects. They will be joined by Rockaway’s own, Mike Servino, on percussion and drums. All three musicians are members of the 18-piece NYC Ska orchestra, who performed here this summer, and now we welcome Kevin & Jonny for their debut performance at Thai Rock
